I actually did not see this coming. With Microsoft's resources and the expansiveness of XBL I thought we'd be safe at least 'till the end of the 360.

Oh well, I can't even remember the last time I played an XB1 game online, so I won't cry foul.

Still, we gotta get some games going!

Wow, what a shame! So many good memories on the original Xbox. I remember how excited I was when I first got on Live. My first game was Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow. At that time, I was so immersed in both that game and in Xbox gaming in general. My library quickly grew over the next year to include more than 25 Xbox Live games. Even back in early 2004, I knew that I was part of something special. I told myself to enjoy every day of gaming, that I would one day look back on it all as a bit of a golden age.

One of my most fondest memories of Live was the time I stayed up all night back in 8th grade playing Splinter Cell and talking to Dark Slayer 5000 (R.I.P.) on the dashboard. I kept meaning to cut things short since I had school the next day, but ended up staying up the entire night. When it was time to leave for school, I felt pretty confident that I could stay awake for all my classes, but ended up falling asleep on the bus! Needless to say, I barely made it through that excruciating day. Looking back on it, I feel pretty fondly about the whole situation. All my teachers kept asking if I wanted to be sent home, but I refused since I viewed being at school as punishment for my actions.

I still played original Xbox games over Live back when I had it from time to time. I never did find anyone else to play Sega GT Online with me. I also never got to invest the time I wanted into games like Guilty Gear X2 #Reload, King of Fighters Maximum Impact, and Dead or Alive.

The great thing about this is that nearly all games have LAN mode, so we aren't losing much. The player base may not be as large as it once was, but I think that after Live closes, we will see an influx of players to services such as XBConnect and Xlink Kai. The people who are still playing Xbox 1 games over Live now probably have the technical skills and more importantly, the drive to continue playing their games via tunneling.

I do hate to know I'll never get to expierience any worthwhile fighting games over Live or xlink for that matter. I still wonder what DOA's online is like to..

Yea, hopefully this can be made possible to. Especially since setting up Xbox with Xlink is looads easier than it is with PS2.

See my available online games under my interests.

I have mixed feelings about Live going offline. On the one hand, I think it is bs having to pay 50 bucks a year to play games online. On the other hand, I never had Live and have wanted to try it on the original Xbox.

I owned one for about 2 years, but then my house got robbed and they stole it and every one of my games. I only had 6 or so. I remember having lots of fun playing halo 2 single player and split screen multiplayer with people. I used to go over to someone's house like once every week or so to play it. Then all my friends started getting Live and these split screen meetups stopped. Unfortunately for me I was stuck on wretched dialup, so I had no way of getting on Live.

If my Xbox had not been stolen by dirty rotten thieves 2 or 3 years ago, I would already be tunneling xbox games right now since I have Xlink setup to tunnel GC and PS2 games.

I intend to one day pick up another Xbox for the purpose of LAN tunneling. That console is so damn big though and I am in a tiny ass room.

This is lazybum from OC in case none of you realize.

Instead of making a thread for it i'll just add to this.

Midtown Madness has a group of players that meet @ 9pm EST so if you have live and wanna get a few more 'miles' before the 15th they should be meeting Sun, Mon, and Tue at the above time.

Also of note maybe not really important BUT should be mentioned i've been DL as much free content as possible if you still have a active live account and are looking to get in on some xlink / xbconnect play it would'nt hurt to grab the content I PGR 2 was charging but i'll take another look to see if its free.
Counter Strike
(2 maps0
Crimson Skies (Previously Down Loaded )
SEGA GT Online (PD)
Midtown Madness 3
(several cars)
Phantom Dust (PD)
Unreal Championship (PD)
Unreal Championship 2
(2 maps and about 8 characters)

EDIT it looks like things will be over in about a hour and a half
Xbox Live 1.0 permanently shuts down at midnight PDT time
Xbox Live is Dead, Long Live Xbox Live
so it seems like they should have said it would close at the end of the 14th instead the 15th (unless you wanna count that 1 minute after Midnight PDT?

Sadly i'll be out most of the day the earliest i'll be able to hop online will be about 10 pm EDT.
I'm game for anything seems to be a group on Midtown Madness 3 and any fighters (although i'm not much good)

The news of the shutdown took me by suprise. I saw a high level of compatibility between the online modes for original Xbox games and those of Xbox 360 games. For example, if you send mail to an Xbox 360 user in Burnout 3, that message will be converted to an Xbox 360 LIVE text message, and the recipient will be able to view it. For this reason, I assumed that the two systems were hard-wired into each other, and that therefore, as long as Xbox 360 games would be playable online, version 1 games would remain playable online, too, just as MasterChief78 had thought. Once I saw a secondhand copy of Dead or Alive: Ultimate on sale, and considered buying it, in part for its online mode, but figured, "Perhaps I should see if I can find a better price somewhere else, later. I'll be able to play it's online mode any time within the next five years, at least." How laughably naive such thoughts appear in retrospect.

What do I think of the shutdown? I think it's a slap in the face to all the Xbox users who, for years, had been told by the most loyal of Xbox fanatics, "even though you must pay for Xbox LIVE, it's better, because with Xbox LIVE, you get what you pay for! Of course something you'd pay for would be better than something that's free!" After being told that, connectivity for version 1 Xbox games is discontinued, with less than three months' notice, while dozens of games for the Playstation 2 are still playable online, most of them at no charge. One who disagrees may retort that many of the online games for the Playstation 2 in the USA had been shut down far before April 15th, 2010, so at least by paying for Xbox LIVE, you were ensuring that all games would remain playable online until the day on which all games were shut down. However, the majority of games for Playstation 2 that had already been shut down were made by EA. All online games EA released for the Xbox connected to EA's servers after authenticating to Xbox LIVE, and all of those games, except for Burnout 3 and Battlefield 2: Modern Combat, had already had their online modes shut down prior to April 15th, anyway. Additionally, servers for the Xbox version of Phantasy Star Online, a non-EA game, were shut down in April of 2008, about two years before the Xbox LIVE shutdown. By the way, are there any other non-EA games whose online modes were terminated prior to the 15th of April?

At least most of the online games have system link, and thus can still be tunneled. Ironically, this may be part of the reason why there wasn't too much backlash in response to the shutdown. Many of the people who still really wanted to play Halo 2 figured, "It's okay, I can just use Xlink Kai after April 15th." Perhaps there also won't be much enthusiasm for any reverse-engineering of Xbox LIVE, and games like auto modellista will never be resurrected.

I believe maybe 1 or 2 others I think one of the Mechassault games was taken offline. not really sure what the 2nd one
(that's in addition to PSO)
It surprised cause I thought for sure the times I put into leaderboards on various games would be there forever, ah well I guess it was silly to think that someone far into the future would be mad at the gamertag DaMan001 on the OutRun2 time trials.

You're thinking of the Conquest mode in MechAssault 2 DaMan. That was taken down years ago, maybe a little before PSO for Xbox was taken offline.

You could still play regular MA2 games, but you couldn't participate in the Conquest mode.

I was under the impression that they were behaving honestly and did not consider the possibility that they were trolling. I agree; ignoring trolls probably is the best way to deal with them.

Okay, my bad. It turns out that the Xbox version of Madden 2009 was also playable online until the April 15th shutdown: http://www.ea.com/2/service-updates .
